The last weekend was very eventful, but not all news was good. On Saturday, the 14th, former UFC fighter and ADCC Hall of Famer Vinny Magalhães was arrested in Las Vegas, Nevada, for committing domestic assault with a deadly weapon. The information was first reported by MMA Fighting.
Magalhães is currently in custody at the Clark County Detention Center and allegedly threatened three individuals with a firearm during a domestic dispute. Despite the tense situation, no shots were fired, and there were no reports of injuries. Magalhães appeared in court a few days after the incident, on the following Tuesday, and is now scheduled to return for his next hearing on December 23, 2024.
If Vinny is found guilty of the three charges, he could face a maximum sentence of 18 years in prison. Magalhães is not the first Jiu-Jitsu and/or MMA star to have encounters with the police, but this is one of the most surprising accusations in recent years. Magalhães was never a particularly polarizing or controversial figure during his career in combat sports and was always considered very respectful and calm by his opponents.
Vinny Magalhães was born in Rio de Janeiro and won some of the sport’s biggest titles. Magalhães won the IBJJF No-Gi World Championship, was a three-time ADCC medalist, champion of M1 Global, and had a relatively short career in the UFC, where he achieved only one victory in four attempts.
