It’s no secret that one of the most anticipated matches of all time is between Mica Galvão, Jansen Gomes, and Tainan Dalpra. And yesterday, on the 17th, we witnessed another chapter in this saga that has been unfolding for a few years now.
Responding to a post made on Instagram by the Canal do Marinho, Mica Galvão finally spoke out about the latest challenge issued by Jansen Gomes after his victory over Fellipe Andrew at BJJ STARS 14, where he declared that he would like to face the black belt of Melqui Galvão. At the time, we also spoke with Jansen, and he emphasized that the fight between the two should happen in 2025 and could take place at any event.
Two weeks later, we got Mica’s response in the comments of Marinho’s post on Instagram. Mica stated that he’s experiencing a special moment in his career, with major organizations trying to secure exclusive contracts that could bring him unprecedented figures in the sport. That’s why he hadn’t yet made a statement on whether he would face Jansen or not.
Mica Galvão commented: “I hadn’t spoken up before, but I’m going through a very important moment in my career. I’ve received offers from platforms that want exclusivity, offering amounts I’ve always dreamed of receiving, which can take me to the next level. On the other hand, these offers would prevent me from taking part in this much-awaited fight.”
Mica stated that the organizations that reached out to him require exclusivity, which would be one of the obstacles for the fight. Another hindrance is that these organizations currently do not hold competitions with the gi. However, Mica made it clear that he would like to face “Nenego,” but he has some preferences for this fight. The black belt wants the match to be without a time limit, no points or advantages, with the only thing that matters being the submission.
“I want to challenge myself and, at the same time, give the fans what they want by making this fight happen. I will leave the decision on the path to follow in the hands of God and my team. My preference, if this fight happens, is that it be without points or advantages, allowing for an open match where one of us only leaves the mat with a submission.”
Mica’s statements had a huge impact on social media, and as a result, just a few hours later, he returned to the public to elaborate on the subject and dive into further details. First, Mica stated that over the past two years, he had been available for any match at BJJ STARS, but for various reasons, none took place (neither with Jansen nor with Tainan). He also reiterated that he would like to face Jansen under the conditions he mentioned earlier, but first, he needs to resolve the negotiations with these organizations.
Mica Galvão has been the top name in the sport for several years and in 2024, he achieved the Super Grand Slam by winning the sport’s biggest tournaments: the IBJJF European, IBJJF Pan, IBJJF Brazilian, IBJJF World, and ADCC in the same year. This accomplishment placed him alongside Rubens Charles “Cobrinha” and solidified his place in history.
